One day | Intensive Street Photography

Not everyone has the time to attend a week-long workshop, so we are happy to offer an on-going series of one day, intensive sessions.

These workshops will take place in various locations, so check back here to find out where the next one will be! Or better yet, sign up to be notified!

Who’s it for?

  • Stuck in a creative rut?
  • Is your inner-artist struggling to find a way out?
  • Are you stymied by technical issues?
  • Would you like to be able to read the urban terrain like a tracker?
  • Are you preparing for a trip or a project?
  • Ready to decipher the design elements of form and structure?
  • Do you want to join together with a network of world-wide street photographers who share your passion?

If you answered yes to any of these, then you're ready to give your photography a highly caffeinated jolt! Our one-day intenstive eXpresso street photography course is designed to answer all these questions—and more!

What will we do?

Your hosts are professional photographer James Conley, and psychologist Dr. Ramesh Bakhtiari. Together, they will provide you with one-on-one and group discussions that will put you on the right path to:

  • Thinking like an artist
  • Embracing your creative self
  • Overcoming anxieties
  • Deciphering body language
  • Seeing the decisive moment
  • Taming light
  • Finding your personal themes
  • Developing empathy with your subjects

You'll learn specific technicques, such as:

  1. Technical settings for your camera
  2. Choosing the right focal length
  3. Using art and design approaches to capture energy and emotion
  4. Selecting subjects and situations, and how to work the scene
  5. How to photograph subjects non-intrusively
  6. Methods for living as an artist every day
  7. How to structure a day of photography
  8. Getting your images right in-camera and reducing post-processing time

What's the schedule?

We will spend a full Saturday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) using a defined area to work in. Starting with group instruction, we will then break out into pairs to practice some techniques before the group is set loose. While you're working the scene, Ramesh and James will provide one-on-one assistance. We will periodically reconvene for group discussion and problem solving. At the end of the shooting day, you'll have the opportunity to develop your day's images and get personalized review. Alternatively, you can develop your images later and schedule a one-on-one review by phone or Skype after the course is over!

When you're finished with the course, you'll have solved the creative and technical barriers holding your photography back and you'll be full to the brim with creative ideas. You'll have discovered themes in your work, and have new ways to capture and share your artistic ideas.

So grab a cup of joe and sign up now! Spaces are limited to a maximum of 10!

Impressionism and Street Photography

We are excited to offer a series of eXpresso shots in Philadelphia! We will be doing special work on Impressionism's unique overlap with street photography, and will have the once in a lifetime chance to take advantage of an amazing exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to really delve deeply into how Impressionism can change your street photography for the better!

Philadelphia will be the only U.S. stop for Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting. On view in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Dorrance Special Exhibition Galleries, the exhibit will include more than 80 works by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, Degas, Manet, and others.

Organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery in London and by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais, in collaboration with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Discovering the Impressionists only appears in three cities during its tour: Paris, London, and its final stop in Philadelphia.

This course is an excellent opportunity for beginners and enthusiasts alike to discover the joys of street photography. Whether you are preparing for a trip and don't want to come back with "tourist pictures," or you are ready to take your existing street photography to a new level, this course will work for you!
